Memorandum Reflection
When writing the memorandum, I took into consideration many types of course learning
objectives such as type of genre, stance, the audience and purpose. Before I started writing, I had to
come up with a topic for the memo, and then identify what my purpose would be. When writing a
memo, the purpose is very important because it is your need for change. For my memo, I decided
that the purpose would be to bring attention to the need to continue Daca. After I figured out my
purpose, I then identified who my audience would be. The audience is also vital because it allows
you to know who you are addressing and also helps you determine what kind of word choice or
language to use. The audience I was addressing was an unknown audience because I didn’t know the
person.
I wanted my memo to not only explain why Daca was important, but give the audience a sense of
the kind of emotion I was writing it with. For this reason, my stance was very subjective. My attitude
was strong, but not too demanding because I didn’t want the audience to feel criticized and stop
reading it. Finally, the rhetorical situation I took into account throughout my entire writing process
was the genre. Every type of genre has its own style of writing, which is why when writing the
memo, I followed the 5 segments: heading, opening, description, solution, and closing. Besides this,
I took into account that a memo has to be brief. In the end this turned out to be the hardest because
there was a lot more details I wanted to add.
