Six Myths About Choosing a College Major
An interesting New York Times article I read was called “Six Myths About Choosing a
College Major”. This article opened my eyes to the big mistakes many upcoming college students or
undergraduate students are making when it comes to choosing their major. Also the article discusses
the myths that many upcoming upcoming college students believe as they are about to enter school.
The myth that surprised me the most was “choice of major matters more than choice of
college”(nytimes.com). This myth can be related to myself because I also focused more on choosing
my major than the kind of college I wanted to go. Interestingly the article discusses how “the better
the college, the better the professional network opportunities, through alumni, parents of classmates
and eventually classmates themselves”. This means that if you go to a more selective school the
chances of you getting a good job are higher than if you go to a less selective school.
Another important myth that I found to be important was “You need a major”. I believe that
this is the biggest myth that undergraduates tend to believe in. They believe that before starting
college it is essential to know what they want to study so they can choose their classes. When they
choose their field sometimes they miss out on exploring other fields that they never knew they could
have enjoyed. In fact the article discusses how in some colleges such as Indiana University “students
gather in learning communities and register for a block of general-education courses within that
meta-major”. Students take take classes based on a certain field of studies, so that they can see the
differences of major and later choice one. In this way they are less pressured and more certain of
what they want. I believe that many other colleges should take the same approach with their students.
