A Second Chance for the Convicted
In both Michelle Jonas and Stanley Andrisse cases, they face difficulties continuing their
education after they are released from prison. The difficulties they face are unfair and unjust for a set
of people who want to change their lives for the better. The criminal justice system needs to help
people like them because they proved themselves to want to do better and actually make a
contribution to society. The system should help them by providing career programs in the prison, so
they can be well prepared once they leave the prison. Besides this, the system should also help the
convicts acquire internships. The internships will better prepare the convicts and let them have
connections to job opportunities available. More specifically it is important that the system fight to
eliminate the question of, are you a convicted criminal in the college applications. Like Michelle
Jonas and Stanley Andrisse stated their convicted past should not define them.
The most effective punishment should be the one similar to what Michelle Jonas and Stanley
Andrisse received. Convicts should be put through an education program and if they show great
commitment, pursue a career. Although the convicts are given this opportunity they need to still
complete their sentence. If the convicts show great potential in pursuing a career than their sentences
should be reduced. If they do not care after several attempts are made than they should be given the
punishment ordered by the judge. Michelle Jonas was convicted of murdering her child, but turned
her life around. She showed remorse for her action and proved that she was serious about changing
by getting a Ph.D in American studies and accomplishing many achievements. I believe that
everyone who proves themselves, deserves a second chance even if they are convicts. If you were
put in a similar situation, you might want the same opportunity.
