Question on “The Miracle in Front Of You”
After reading the article “The Miracle in Front of You” by Janice Schuster, my question is
should medical students take philosophy classes and how would this be an advantage? I propose this
question because many times throughout the interview, Barfield states how being a doctor is more
than just learning the biology aspect of the field. We know that in medical school, the students
mostly focus on the science classes such as biology or anatomy, so many would not even consider
wasting time taking philosophy. Barfield on the other hand, believes that philosophy is essential in
medicine because it allows us to think about death.
The discussion on death also sparked my question on philosophy. Barfield argues that doctors
might know what causes death, but they do not know what death actually is. He also puts emphasis
on how doctors should question what happens after death. Is there life after death, does reincarnation
exist? Questions like these are one of the fundamental principles of philosophy. In my opinion I
agree with Barfield in the need for doctors to be good in philosophy because right now I am also
taking philosophy and I believe there are many topics that would help in the medical aspect. Besides
this, my philosophy teacher also told me that the best philosopher questions everything. This
connects to Barfields idea of doctors needing to think about other fields besides science.
