“Why we need to understand science” by Carl Sagan

I really enjoyed reading this article because it not only touched on the issues of not knowing

science, but it also provided solutions to the problem. What caught my attention the most was when

Carl Sagan criticized Americans for having a dependency on science and technology, but many not

knowing anything about science or technology. I agreed with this statement because it is very true.

Today many of us use all sorts of technology, such as phones or computers, yet we lack the

knowledge of how it was created. I also agreed with Sagan when he gave the reason for our lack of

knowledge being society’s fault because of their portrayment of science. Children get exposed to evil

scientists when they watch t.v and are told bad stories such as frankenstein that they tend to think

that is what a scientist does in real life. Besides this, I believe that science does get a bad reputation

because of it’s bad history; creation of atomic bombs, nuclear weapons etc. Science's bad history,

also has some people running away from it because they think that by advancing science,  some sort

of tragedy can happen (robotics taking over the world). Despite these reasons of lack of knowledge,

the overall benefits of science outweigh them. Science can be so powerful that it can help us find the

solution to our problems such as curing diseases or creating inventions.

Carl Sagan gave many solutions on how he believed we could get more Americans to be more

knowledgeable toward the sciences. The one solution I found to be the most important was the use of

motivation. We  have seen countless times that when we motivate someone to do something they are

most likely to do it. Parents should expose their children to all the forms of science and get them to

take part on hands-on activities, so that they can know that science isn’t boring. This way as children

grow up they will be more interested in learning about science rather than just taking it as a subject

requirement. We can’t let the interest in science die because for however long we live on this planet

we will need it to survive.
