Dear Ms. Matyakubova,
Subject: My Hopes of a better life

If I was ever asked to name a hero, I would immediately respond my mother. She has always been my role-model and source of motivation. She is also the reason that I have celebrated a lot of accomplishments throughout my life. Never in a million years would I be able to imagine my life without her, which is why when she was diagnosed with tuberculosis, when I was in seventh grade, my world came to a stop. Six months she was in the hospital, with tubes inside her, arms black and blue from the injections, and losing weight day by day. It made me so sad and angry to see her in so much pain. Thankfully the doctors were able to cure her, but it was during that moment that I realized not everyone was so lucky. For this reason, I decided I wanted to become a Doctor. I didn’t want anyone to feel the same feelings of desperation and fear I had felt when my mom got sick. I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives.

Ever since I was little I have had mixed feelings about reading and writing. Reading is something I really enjoy. I believe that as I have grown up my reading skills have improved. I have the ability to not just read long texts, but to analyze than and draw conclusions. Another reading skill, I developed was skimming. Skimming has helped me in many ways especially when I have to read long texts during an exam. I am able to skim through the passages and acquire the main idea of the passages. This skill saves me time. Writing, on the other hand, has always been a problem for me. Sometimes it takes me 20 minutes just to write a paragraph because I know what I want to say, but don’t know how to write it. Another issue I deal with in writing is my tendency to make sentences to wordy. Despite these issues, I still believe I have acquired some writing skills. For example, before writing I always do an outline, so I can organize my ideas. Besides this I also always try to proofread my writings for any grammar or punctuation mistakes.

I believe that as I start a new school year, I always have the ability to become a better student. This is why in my academic plans, I tend to aim high. First of I not only want to get good grades in all my courses, but I also want to have a clear understanding of each course especially biology. Besides this, I plan on taking electives related to biology such as anatomy or cell biology. I want to take these courses because I know they will open my eyes to the different ways biology can be adapted. Secondly, I plan on preparing myself for the MCAT because I want to do well on the exam.
My professional goal has not changed since I was thirteen. My dream is to become a doctor. One of the reasons that I want to become a doctor is because I want to take part in different organizations that help those in need. I want to be the doctor who travels to less developed countries and changes the lives of others, even if it just means a smile in return. I was born in Peru and I came to the United States when I was only four years old. I don’t remember a lot from my time there, but I understand the hardships that my family went through there. My family has given me nothing but support especially my mom. Though we now live in America, we don’t really live comfortably, which is why I plan on buying my family their own home once I get a decent job. For me achieving my dream would finally give me the opportunity to break barriers by being a woman, latina, and an immigrant. I thank you for taking the time to read my letter and hope to hear from you soon!

Sincerely,
