The Epidemic of HIV/AIDS Across the World
Thesis: Since it was first discovered, HIV/AIDS has left a lasting turmoil upon mankind. This disease has not only affected the people’s health, but has left a hole in their pocket, labeled them as outcasts in society, and forced them to receive backlash from media and religious places.

Cosgrove, Ben. "The Photo That Changed the Face of AIDS". TIME. Nov. 2014. TIME Web. 25 October 2017.
The famous picture of activist David Kirby - laying in his death bed, while AIDS was taking over his body – has become a symbol in both the LGBT and HIV/AIDS community. The picture also has stirred a lot of controversy, some people argue that it was a form of exploitation in order to make profit, for the photographer while others believe it showed the truth about AIDS. Regardless of the people's opinions the photo has raised awareness of how people suffer and need aid when they have AIDS/HIV. This picture was able to change society's view on a person suffering with AIDS.
This article is significant to my research because it makes an appeal to pathos, making the audience see how life with AIDS can end. When people see this photo they feel some sort of sympathy or compassion for Kirby.  For this reason, I plan to incorporate this article into my fifth body paragraph. The article will support my source of how media has portrayed HIV/AIDS in a positive way.

Knodel, John “Poverty and the Impact of AIDS on Older Persons: Evidence from Cambodia and Thailand.” Economic Development /Cultural Change, Vol. 56, No.2, 2008, pp. 441-475.
There has been a pattern in the links between poverty and HIV/AIDS. The burden has especially affected the families who need to take care of their loved one who has HIV/AIDS. A research was conducted in where families in Cambodia and Thailand were studied to see how economically stable they were left after taking care of someone who had HIV/AIDS. The results showed that the families lost money on treatments and in the end left in the poverty class.
This journal is vital to my research because it explains and provides evidence on how HIV/AIDS has put an economical burden on societies. The journal also uses the countries of Cambodia and Thailand as examples, to show how their economy has declined. When I was looking for a journal to research how AIDS/HIV leaves an economic affect, I did not just want to see how it affects a person, but a country as a whole. This journal provides me with this kind of insight and I plan to use it in my fourth body paragraph.

McCullom, Rod. “An African Pope Won't Change the Vatican's Views on Condoms and AIDS.” The Atlantic, Atlantic Media Company, 26 Feb. 2013, www.theatlantic.com/sexes/archive/2013/02/an-african-pope-wont-change-the-vaticans-views-on-condoms-and-aids/273535/.
Before Pope Benedict XVI resigned in 2014, he spoke not only for himself, but the entire Catholic Church when he preached against the use of condoms in order to prevent HIV/AIDS. When the ex-pope took a trip to Africa he viewed the HIV/AIDS epidemic there as the lack of people being able to control themselves. Many in the Catholic Church believe that HIV/AIDS is more of an ethical problem and people should practice abstinence before marriage and fidelity while marriage. This belief by the Catholic Church still stands today.
I plan to integrate this into my sixth body paragraph, where I will discuss the clash between the church and use of condoms in order to prevent HIV/AIDS. This paragraph will serve as a counterclaim in my research because many believe that the best way to stop HIV/AIDS is to use condoms, but others believe abstinence is the answer. The article provides evidence on the religious point of view, which will aid in the opposition of using condoms. Also, this article is vital because it speaks of the beliefs that are relevant in modern times.

"The Impact of AIDS on People and Societies". Report On The Global AIDS Epidemic. UNAIDS Web. 2006, http://data.unaids.org/pub/globalreport/2006/2006_gr_ch04_en.pdf
In certain places of the world, where AIDS has become a serious epidemic, the disease has put a stop in the human development of these societies. The disease has increased poverty, declined health, and increased child mortality. These issues have created a barrier for a society's future generation to prosper. Since there is no cure available, less-developed countries are destined to face these kinds of step backs.

I consider this report to be essential because it discuss the impact that HIV/AIDS has had on societies and goes in depth of how one disease can leave a lasting effect on a country. I will use this in order to make an appeal to logos and pathos. The report contains a lot of statistics regarding increase of poverty and deaths, this will make an appeal to logos. An appeal to pathos will include the stories of poor countries, who have been hit hard by the epidemic and are not able to persevere. I will use this in my second body paragraph.
